ACCP: High-Risk Smokers Warrant CT Screening

چکیده
SAN FRANCISCO – A proposed new definition of acute respiratory distress syndrome describes categories based on mild, moderate, or severe hypoxemia that correlate increasing severity with significantly increased mortality or increased time on mechanical ventilation among survivors. The draft definition, created under a consensus process by an international panel of experts, was refined by empirical testing in a meta-analysis of data on 4,457 patients in two large data sets from seven centers. The risk of mortality from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was 27% with mild disease, 32% with moderate ARDS, and 45% with severe ARDS, Dr. Niall D. Ferguson and Dr. Gordon D. Rubenfeld reported at an international conference of the American Thoracic Society. The median duration of mechanical ventilation in survivors was 5 days in patients with mild ARDS, 7 days with ACCP: High-Risk Smokers Warrant CT Screening

Increasing smokers' risk perception improves CT screening participation.
We read with interest the article by Patel et al and wish to comment on their findings with specific regard to smokers’ risk perception, motivation and low participation rates in CT screening programmes. Based on the studies to date, there is a consistent theme that smokers’ participation in CT screening programmes for lung cancer is poor when their motivation is low and much greater when their...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Lung Cancer Risks at Which to Screen Ever- and Never-Smokers: Screening Rules Applied to the PLCO and NLST Cohorts
BACKGROUND Lung cancer risks at which individuals should be screened with computed tomography (CT) for lung cancer are undecided. This study's objectives are to identify a risk threshold for selecting individuals for screening, to compare its efficiency with the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) criteria for identifying screenees, and to determine whether never-smokers should be scre...

3.4.1. For smokers and former smokers who are age 55 to 74 and who have smoked for Background: Lung cancer is by far the major cause of cancer deaths largely because in the majority of patients it is at an advanced stage at the time it is discovered, when curative treatment is no longer feasible. This article examines the data regarding the ability of screening to decrease the number of lung ca...
متن کاملRadiation risks potentially associated with low-dose CT screening of adult smokers for lung cancer.
PURPOSE To estimate the radiation-related lung cancer risks associated with annual low-dose computed tomographic (CT) lung screening in adult smokers and former smokers, and to establish a baseline risk that the potential benefits of such screening should exceed. MATERIALS AND METHODS The estimated lung radiation dose from low-dose CT lung examinations corresponds to a dose range for which th...
متن کاملLung cancer screening CT-based prediction of cardiovascular events.
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to derivate and validate a prediction model for cardiovascular events based on quantification of coronary and aortic calcium volume in lung cancer screening chest computed tomography (CT). BACKGROUND CT-based lung cancer screening in heavy smokers is a very timely topic. Given that the heavily smoking screening population is also at risk for cardiovascular...
